Who We Are

Message From the Founder, Victoria Greenwood

I am passionate for the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation. I am also a competitive dancer who received foundational training at the National Ballet of Canada. I appreciate that being a lifelong dancer has instilled confidence, positive self worth and a healthy lifestyle in myself. My mission is to bring the art of dance and all its amazing benefits into Indigenous youth’s lives. For the last two years, myself and the Indigenous Dance Foundation team have traveled to Nunavut and taught dance programs and have witnessed the positive effects it can make in children’s lives. We launched our virtual programs that make dance accessible for all Indigenous youth in Canada, year-round.

The Indigenous Dance Foundation is made of a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals, working together for Truth and Reconciliation.

Our Core Principles

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

The Indigenous Dance Foundation aims to bring equity to recreation in Indigenous communities. We work to uplift Indigenous peoples, providing spaces for them to feel welcome.

Dance!

  1. Appreciation of our bodies and the incredible dance movements we can do!

  2. Instilling confidence!

  3. Providing opportunities for socialization, away from screens!

  4. Works towards youth’s positive mental health.

  5. Positive impacts that extend beyond the dance studio!

Recreation

We recognize the powerful impacts of recreation on youth’s mental and physical well-being. We work towards reducing barriers to recreation for Indigenous communities in Canada’s North and across Canada.

Movement and Sport

The Indigenous Dance Foundation focuses on reducing barriers to sports participation for Indigenous youth.

Youth Empowerment

We are a youth-led non-profit that impacts youth across Canada! We believe youth have the power to make a difference!

Reconciliation

Indigenous Dance Foundation works towards the completion of Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action #89 on Sport and Reconciliation, “We call upon the federal government to amend the Physical Activity and Sport Act to support reconciliation by ensuring that policies to promote physical activity as a fundamental element of health and well-being, reduce barriers to sports participation, increase the pursuit of excellence in sport, and build capacity in the Canadian sport system, are inclusive of Aboriginal peoples.”
